We are constantly searching the internet and other sources in order to inform you as soon as possible about the most interesting events for Taormina, its surroundings and Sicily. For the year 2019 until now we found only a few events, mostly concerts in Acireale (40 km from Taormina) and Catania (55 km from Taormina) which we listed below – and some events at Taormina’s Antique Theater, a real highlight, see below!

Attending one of the events inside Taormina’s famous Antique Theatre is surely one of the most beautiful experiences during a summertime stay in Taormina. From mid June until beginning of September lots of premium classical or pop concerts, opera and ballet performances use to attrack hundreds of spectators.

HIGHTLIGHTS 2019

Teatro Antico – Taormina
Francesco de Gregori & Orchestra with his Greatest Hits Live at the wonderful Antique Theatre fof Taormina  Francesco De Gregori together with a big orchestra  for the first time will present his greatest songs in a symphonic context. The orchestra, composed of forty elements, and the Gnu Quartet composed by Raffaele Rebaudengo (viola), Francesca Rapetti (flute), Roberto Izzo (violin) and Stefano Cabrera (cello), in addition to the band that has accompanied De Gregori for a long time now. Taormina FilmFest 201965th edition of the Taormina FilmFest will be organized by VideoBank, artistic direction: Silvia Bizio and Gianvito Casadonte. The programme includes gala evenings and awards at the Teatro Antico, with big national and international cinema stars, film projections and workshops at the Palazzo dei Congressi.

Teatro Antico – Taormina
Martha Argerich and Daniel Rivera. Martha Argerich, considered as the greatest pianist of all times, performes together with her collegue Daviel Rivera. Both were born in Argentina, Rivera meanwhile is Italian citizen. The artistic collaboration of  Rivera and Argerich started in 2009, when Rivera performed a transcription of Straviskij’s “Sacre du printemps” at the “Progetto Martha Argerich” in Lugano. During the concert in Taormina they will perform the Concert n. 1 in E-flat major by Franz Liszt (Martha Argerich) and the Concert op. 16 in A minor by Edvard Grieg (Daniel Rivera).

August 30 and 31 (21.30 h)

Andrea Bocelli & friends in concert. The popular Italian tenor will perform his most famous hits and opera arias, accompanied by a soprano and other guest stars. With his latest album “ Si” (October 26, 2018) he published unedited songs, among others in duet with Ed Sheeran, Raphael Gualazzi and his son Matteo, in more than 60 countries and seven laguages, Andrea Bocelli was the first Italian artist to become Nunmber One of the most sold in UK and USA in less than 10 days. During his most successful career Bocelli performed for popes, presidents and kings, he was present in the most important concert halls and opera theatres of the world, and collaborated with big pop stars such as Ed Sheeran, Nicole Scherzinger, Céline Dion, Tony Bennet and many more. The first concert on August 30 is sold out! So there has been added the second evening August 31!

Francesco Messina – Suggestione ed echi dall’antica Naxos. Exhibition with works by the Sicilian artist inspired by the antique history of Naxos and Taormina. An exhibition with works by the artist born in Linguaglossa in the year 1900, who lived and worked in Genua and Milan until 1995,  known for his modern classic figurative sculptures.

Le Stelle di Taormina – The Stars of Taormina – Posters and photos of the films shot in Taormina. The exhibition forges a bridge of nearly 100 years, from the very beginnings of silent movies, when the french director Louis Mercanton shot a film called “L’appel du Sang”, via “L’avventura” by Michealangelo Antonioni, Luc Bessons “Il Grand Bleu” and “Il Piccolo Diavolo” by Roberto Begnini to  “Mighty Aphrodite” by Woddy Allen and many more.

Antiquitatis Volumina – an exhibition of some tresures of the town’s archives, old inbunables and books dating back to the 15th and 16th century.

June 20 to 27
Fondazione Mazzullo – Palazzo Duchi di Santo Stefano, Taormina
de_sidere exhibition on the occasion of the taobuk festival with paintings by the Sicilian artist Sergio Fiorentino (born in Catania in 1973) he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti Catania and in 2011moved to Noto, where he has been living and working since then. He produced a series of canvases especially for this exhibition, starting from the title of this year’s festival “desiderio” he went back to its latin origin which gets back to de-sidus. Sidus meaning is “star”, so for the latin de-sidus meant “lack of stars”. Fiorentino interpretes this state of mind. His paintings mostly show oversized dreamlike human potraits floating in surrealistic spaces.

La Sicilia Sicily seen by artists and their childrenA confrontation of witnesses of Sicilians, found in the stocks of the „National Archive of Diaries“ in Pieve Santo Stefano, and a series of pregious paintings found in the collection of the Fondazione Sicilia. With works by Renato Guttoso, Michele Catti and others. An exhibition curated by the journalist and author Roberta Scorranese.

Chiesa del Carmine – Taormina
Danzando con la mente – Dancing with the mind. Photographic portraits of famous writers and artists by Leonardo Céndamo. Leonardo Céndamo, born in Foggia in 1939, in his artistic career he shot fascinating portraits of celebrities like Andrea Camilleri, Gabriel García Márquez, Umberto Eco, Isabel Allende, Alessandro Barrico, Jonathan Frantzen, Roberto Saviani, Andy Warhol and many others.

June 1 to 2 and June 8 to 9
Centro storico – Randazzo
Randazzo in Flower – between nature and art. The 2nd edition of the festival held on the two first weekends in June inside the historic city of the town of  Randazzo at the northside of Mt. Etna. An event that aims to embellish the city of Randazzo with the use of of floral elements and recycled materials (in the name of environmental respect and cleanliness). There will be an exhibits-plants market, local products of local companies and exhibitions of artisanal and artistic works, accompanied by musical moments and various entertainment.

Pal’Art Hotel – Via Tuparello,  Acireale
Ultimo on his “colpa delle favole” tour 2019. The singer songwriter from Rome, winner of the newcomers section of Samremo Festival 2018 with his single „Il ballo delle incertezze“ in concert.

Dove fiorisce la Jacaranda – Where the Jacaranda tree blooms. 7th edition of this exquisite fest in honour of to the mediteranean plants and gardens and to arts, held inside the splendid gardens of the noble Villa Trinità. This time the fest is dedicated to the material wood, heart of every garden and inspiration to arts. There will be a market and exhibition of plants and sculptures and environmental art works by Marco Nones, Federico Seppo, Ligama, Elio Vanzo, Livio and Giorgio Conta, Nino Triolo, Mariano Vassellai and Giampaolo Osele. The gardens of Villa Trinità have been created by the agronomist, landscape architect and artist Salvadore Bonajuto. Inside this magic gardens there i salso an antique but still working “saia”, one of the genious irrigation systems, as they where introduced to Sicily by the Arabs during the times of the „Emirate of Sicily“ (from 831 to 1091)

Taobuk Gala Evening of the Taormina literary festival, starting with musics by the Orchestra of the Teatro Massimo Bellini Catania, conducted by Valter Sivilotti, solists: the young Ucrainian violinist Anastansiya Petryshak and the georgian mezzo-soprano Nino Surguladze, followed by the Italian singer songwriters Simone Cristicchi and Nina Zilli. The evening continues with the film director Marco Bellocchio, the actors Massimo Ghini and Nancy Brilli, the writers Jhumpa Lahiri and Ian McEwan (who both will be honoured with the Taobuk Award for Literary Excellence). Last but not least the Catania born Italian designer Marella Ferrera will receive the Taobuk Award “Trame di Storia”.

Taormina FilmFest 201965th edition of the Taormina FilmFest will be organized by VideoBank, artistic direction: Silvia Bizio and Gianvito Casadonte. The programme includes gala evenings and awarding ceremonies, screenings and presentations at the Teatro Antico, with big national and international cinema stars and more film projections and workshops at the Palazzo dei Congressi. The festival will pay particular attention to films directed by women, with a focus on Arab and Oriental cinema, global social issues, films by young directors, including fiction, documentaries and short films, with a section of Sicilian shorts. “Ladies in Black”, the new film by the Australian director Bruce Beresford, will open the 65th edition of the Taormina Film Fest, Beresford will be present along with co-star Julia Ormonde and other actors of the film. The Jury will be presided by Oliver Stone and composed among others by the writer Andrè Aciman, the composer Carlo Siliotto and the actress Laura Morante. On the screen at the Antique Theater and in the Taormina Congress hall, will be presented previews from all over the world as the new film by Marta Coolidge “I’ll find you”.  Among the numerous national and international guests will be also Orscar prize winning Octavia Spencer (The Help) star of the series “Are you sleeping? ” and Nicole Kidman, who will receive the Taormina Arte Award; Apple will announce its official entry as a content producer at the Taormina Film Fest, presenting its documentary “The elephant queen” and the film” Hala “, produced by actress and director Jada Pinkett Smith.

Dream Theater in concert on their Distance over Time Tour. The famous American progressive metal band or art rock band first formed under the name Majesty in 1985 by John Petrucci, John Myung and Mike Portnoy while they attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. Current members are John Petrucci (guitars), John Myung (bass), James LaBrie (lead vocals), Jordan Rudess (keyboards, piano) and Mike Mangini (drums, percussion).

America in concert. The British-America band was formed in London in 1970 by Dewey Bunnel, Dan Peek and Gerry Beckley, the band still tours with its remaining two founding members Gerry Beckley (lead and backing vocals, keyboards, guitars, bass and harmonica) and Dewey Bunnell (lead and backing vocal, guitars, percussion) . Dan Peek left the band in 1977 and died in 2011. Three new band members are Richard Campbell (bass and vocals), Ryland Steen (drums, percussion) and Steve Fekete (guitars, keayboards, backing vocals).

Nick Mason and the Saucerful of Secrets. The ex-drummer of the legendary band Pink Floyd with his band composed by Gary Kemp, Guy Pratt, Lee Harris and Dom Beken. Pink Floyd Legend – Shine Pink Floyd Moon. Solists and Ensemble Daniele Cipriani with a choreography by Micha van Hoecke, life musics by the band Pink Floyd Legend. The original music by Pink Floyd and mainly the famous song Shine on You Crazy Diamond inspired Micha van Hoecke to create this dancing piece which takes the spectators to a surreal moonlike scenery.

Subsonica in concert. The Italian electronic rock band, founded 1996 in Torino, from 1997 to 2007 published 7 albums and in 2018 their eigth, entitled “8”. With their mix of experimental electronic sound and a tipical „Italian“ melodious impact, they have always been a very successful live act.

Martha Argerich and Daniel Rivera. Martha Argerich, considered as the greatest pianist of all times, performes together with her collegue Daviel Rivera. Both were born in Argentina, Rivera meanwhile is Italian citizen. The artistic collaboration of  Rivera and Argerich started in 2009, when Rivera performed a transcription of Straviskij’s “Sacre du printemps” at the “Progetto Martha Argerich” in Lugano. During the concert in Taormina they will perform the Concert n. 1 in E-flat major by Franz Liszt (Martha Argerich) and the Concert op. 16 in A minor by Edvard Grieg (Daniel Rivera).
