We are constantly searching the internet and other sources in order to inform you as soon as possible about the most interesting events for Taormina, its surroundings and Sicily. For the year 2019 until now we found only a few events, mostly concerts in Acireale (40 km from Taormina) and Catania (55 km from Taormina) which we listed below – and some events at Taormina’s Antique Theater, a real highlight, see below!

Attending one of the events inside Taormina’s famous Antique Theatre is surely one of the most beautiful experiences during a summertime stay in Taormina. From mid June until beginning of September lots of premium classical or pop concerts, opera and ballet performances use to attrack hundreds of spectators.

Teatro Antico – Taormina
Francesco de Gregori & Orchestra with his Greatest Hits Live at the wonderful Antique Theatre fof Taormina  Francesco De Gregori together with a big orchestra  for the first time will present his greatest songs in a symphonic context. The orchestra, composed of forty elements, and the Gnu Quartet composed by Raffaele Rebaudengo (viola), Francesca Rapetti (flute), Roberto Izzo (violin) and Stefano Cabrera (cello), in addition to the band that has accompanied De Gregori for a long time now. Taormina FilmFest 201965th edition of the Taormina FilmFest will be organized by VideoBank, artistic direction: Silvia Bizio and Gianvito Casadonte. The programme includes gala evenings and awards at the Teatro Antico, with big national and international cinema stars, film projections and workshops at the Palazzo dei Congressi.

Martha Argerich and Daniel Rivera. Martha Argerich, considered as the greatest pianist of all times, performes together with her collegue Daviel Rivera. Both were born in Argentina, Rivera meanwhile is Italian citizen. The artistic collaboration of  Rivera and Argerich started in 2009, when Rivera performed a transcription of Straviskij’s “Sacre du printemps” at the “Progetto Martha Argerich” in Lugano. During the concert in Taormina they will perform the Concert n. 1 in E-flat major by Franz Liszt (Martha Argerich) and the Concert op. 16 in A minor by Edvard Grieg (Daniel Rivera).

Andrea Bocelli & friends in concert. The popular Italian tenor will perform his most famous hits and opera arias, accompanied by a soprano and other guest stars. With his latest album “ Si” (October 26, 2018) he published unedited songs, among others in duet with Ed Sheeran, Raphael Gualazzi and his son Matteo, in more than 60 countries and seven laguages, Andrea Bocelli was the first Italian artist to become Nunmber One of the most sold in UK and USA in less than 10 days. During his most successful career Bocelli performed for popes, presidents and kings, he was present in the most important concert halls and opera theatres of the world, and collaborated with big pop stars such as Ed Sheeran, Nicole Scherzinger, Céline Dion, Tony Bennet and many more. The first concert on August 30 is sold out! Ex Chiesa del Carmine – Taormina
Gente che va. Storie di emigrazione. Exhibition with photographies by Gios Bernardi telling stories of emigration during the 50ies and 60ies of the 20th century. Photographies taken with lots of sensibilità, a documentary of the hard years in Italy during which so many decided to emigrate in research of a better life. Moments taken in situations of departure, of farewell and suffering. Una fotografia sociale che racconta con sorprendente nitidezza la fatica, le speranze, le paure di un intero popolo senza mai indugiare nella ricerca dell’effetto, avvicinandosi con estremo pudore e rispetto ai soggetti fotografati.

Francesco Messina – Suggestione ed echi dall’antica Naxos. Exhibition with works by the Sicilian artist inspired by the antique history of Naxos and Taormina. An exhibition with works by the artist born in Linguaglossa in the year 1900, who lived and worked in Genua and Milan until 1995,  known for his modern classic figurative sculptures.

Centro storico – Savoca (ME)
La Passione di Cristo – The Passion of Christ. In the beautiful scenery of the medieval center of the village of Savoca (Province of Messina), just 30 minutes drive from Taormina, the artistic association Centurio from San Cataldo shows a reenactment of the Passion of Christ with historical costumes. The performance starts at the Convento dei Cappuccini and follows the streets of the historic center to the Monte Calvario and the Church called “Beata Vergine dei sette dolori e della Santa Croce”.
Caratteristiche della via crucis sono “le stazioni”, parzialmente scavate nella roccia.

Taormina. Da Goethe all’alba del Terzo Millenio – documentary film about the history of Taormina by Giovanni Russotti and Salvatore Nuccio Narcisi.

April 19  (at dawn)
Centro storico – Taormina
Good Friday Procession in Taormina. A most impressive procession, that takes its way from Piazza Duomo through Taorminas Corso Umberto I in direction of Piazza Santa Caterina. Men and women in black carry the sculptures showing the passion of Christ. All shop’s lighting and all street illuminatiion on the Corso Umberto will be switched off, as soon as the procession is arriving. Only the candles of the procession give some low light. When it is passed by, the shopkeepers on Corso Umberto continue with their business and again switch on the lights.

Centro storico – Trapani
Processione dei Misteri – Good Friday procession, one of the longest lasting and oldest in Italy. Beginning at about 14 h in the afternoon it lasts for nearly 24 hours. Reinactment of  the passion and the dead of Jesus Christ.

Centro – Pietraperzia (EN)
Processione de Lu Signuri di li fasci. The preparing of the Good Friday Evening procession already beginns at 15 h with the crucifix to be carried from the Chiesa del Carmine to the cathedral and back. A very special rite: as a sign of their faith more than 400 believers tie themselves to a high pylon with ribbons, that will be carried along the streets of the city during the procession.

April 19 to 22
Town center – Palermo
Easter celebrations in Palermo take place all over town and feature impressive street processions and re-enactments of the Last Supper. There are three splendid processions on Good Friday, dating back several centuries. The procession of the Cocchieri used to be seen by the local aristocrats as an opportunity to show off their power and wealth. Thirty-two participants take turns in carrying the statues of Christ and Madonna, escorted by people wearing original medieval armour. The procession departs from the Chiesa della Madonna dell’Itria at around 14.00 h, though it is advisable to check the time with the tourist office a few days in advance. The other processions dedicated to Maria Addolorata and Santa Maria Soledad are similar, finishing late at night. The times and places of departure can again be checked with the local tourist office. Easter Sunday celebrations feature the re-enactment of the Last Supper at major churches throughout the city.

Prizzi (PA)
Easter celebrations in Prizzi. The small town in the middle of the western part of Sicily is famous for its easter celebrations, starting with the blessing oft he palm leafs on Palm Sunday. On Good Friday from 12.00 h there will be a procession on the Via Crucis to the Monte Calvarino, where the crucifixion will be called to mind. Another procession starts at 19.00 h. The most famous part of the easter celebrations of Prizzi takes place on Easter Sunday, April 21 this year (15.00 to 23.00 h): the Ballo dei Diavoli (in Sicilian U Ballu di Diavuli, the Dance of the Devils). A group of Devils (dressed in red and with dreadful masks) and the Death (dressend in yellow, with a frightening mask and armed with a crossbow) dance in the streets and try to catch people’s souls to bring them to hell. The victims of  the Death will be lockeded up in a house and have to pay a small amout of money to get liberated again. All day the three representatives of the evil chase people and make their jokes with them. The highlight oft he day is, when the Devils and the Death arrive at the main place in order to overpower the statues oft he Madonna and of Christ, but are beaten by three angels. With the victory of the good, the bells oft he church ring, the devils start a rite of purification, and the feast of joy can start.

Centro – Terrasini (PA)
Festa di li Schietti Folcloristic feast on Easter Saturday and Sunday. A feast that has nothing to do with the religious rites in these days. La Festa di li Schietti is a competition of bachelors, who still are hoping to get a wife by showing their maleness and strength. The competition asks to lift a bitter orange tree of about 50 kg as long as possible. The two days of competition are accompanied by tastings of local food, processions and musics.

Adrano (CT)
I Diavulazzi di Pasqua or La Diavolata. In the morning the statues of Christ, of the Madonna and of the Angel will be brought to the Piazza Umberto where the „Diavolata”, the struggle between the evil and the good takes place, ending up with the victory of peace. This tradition goes back to a text called „La Resurrezione” written by Don Anselmo Laudani in 1752.

Gangi (PA)
Easter celebrations in Gangi involve various rituals and processions throughout the Holy Week, though the most interesting event happens on Easter Sunday, when an unusual rivalry between saints takes place. Devotees of the Madonna compete against those who venerate Jesus. The peaceful competition consists of creating the best decorations in the streets in the centre of town, near the cathedral. They assume the shape of arches, bizarrely constructed of bread, vegetables and other foodstuff.

Forza D’Agrò (ME)
Traditional Festa dell’Alloro and the Procession of the Sacri Oli. The young people of the village create banners made from laurel leaves in honour of the SS. Trinità. After the awarding of the most beautiful example all banners will be carried in a procession alongside the Via SS. Annunziata to the Chiesa della Triade. On this Monday of the Angels the people of the village present to everyone the „collure”, tipical sicilian easter sweets (in memory to Abraham in the desert and the three angels).

All over Italy
Festa della Liberazione. National holiday in memory of the day of the liberation from Nazi occupation of Italy during world War II and the end of the fascist regime of Mussolini in the year of 1945. Together with the English and American allied forces the Italian partisans occupied the main cities of Italy and liberated Italy. April 25 was the day of the year 1945 when the National Liberation Committee of Upper Italy proclaimed the death sentence for all fascist leaders, including benito Mussolini, who was shot three days later.  Italy celebrates this day with the president’s wreath-laying ceremony, with parades, concerts and demonstrations.

Radicepura – Strada Provinciale 17 to 19, Giarre
Radicepura Garden Festival Opening of the festival which descrive itself as the most important garden design festival in the medeterranean. The visitors can admire 10 fruit and vegetable gardens and 2 big parks created by internationally reknowned garden designers such as Antonio Perazzi and Andy Sturgeon Landscape and Garden Design. There will be artistic installations, educational gardens and guided olfactory and tactile tours and a programm with cultural events like concerts, film screenings, art exhibitions and readings. Tenuta Ambelia – Militello (CT)
Fiera mediterranea del cavallo. Mediterranean Horse Fair. The important horse fair in 2019 will take place in Sicily, with a prensentation of horses from all riparian countries of the mediterranean. The location, the Tenuta Ambelia, ca. 40 km from Catania, is a historic 16th century farm with 45 ha. It breeds the famous and endangered Scilian horse “Purosangue Orientale” (which resembles the Arabian whole-blood horse) and is one of the biggest of ca. 100 Sicilian stud farms. In Sicily there are two native horse breeds and two native donkey breeds: the “Cavallo Purosangue Orientale” and the “Cavallo Sanfratellano”, the “Ragusano” Donkeys and those from “Pantelleria”.

Streets, places and various locations – Taormina
Food & Flower Weekend 2nd edition of this special event, organized by the „Taormine“ association of  traders and entrepreneurs of Taormina. A weekend dedicated to the flavors and tastes of springtime. The city of Taormina will bloom with flowers, arranged by florists and nurseries of the region. There will be a contest of the most beautifully planted balconies and trimmed shop windows, and some of the best chefs in town will dedicate their menues to the topic of this weekend.

The festival will pay particular attention to films directed by women, with a focus on Arab and Oriental cinema, global social issues, films by young directors, including fiction, documentaries and short films, with a section of Sicilian shorts. „Ladies in Black”, the new film by the Australian director Bruce Beresford, will open the 65th edition of the Taormina Film Fest, Beresford will be present along with co-star Julia Ormonde and other actors of the film. The Jury will be presided by Oliver Stone and composed among others by the writer Andrè Aciman, the composer Carlo Siliotto and the actress Laura Morante. On the screen at the Antique Theater and in the Taormina Congress hall, will be presented previews from all over the world as the new film by Marta Coolidge „I’ll find you”.  Among the numerous national and international guests will be also Orscar prize winning Octavia Spencer (The Help) star of the series „Are you sleeping? „; Apple will announce its official entry as a content producer at the Taormina Film Fest, presenting its documentary „The elephant queen” and the film” Hala „, produced by actress and director Jada Pinkett Smith.

Dream Theater in concert on their Distance over Time Tour. The famous American progressive metal band or art rock band first formed under the name Majesty in 1985 by John Petrucci, John Myung and Mike Portnoy while they attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. Current members are John Petrucci (guitars), John Myung (bass), James LaBrie (lead vocals), Jordan Rudess (keyboards, piano) and Mike Mangini (drums, percussion).

Dan Peek left the band in 1977 and died in 2011. Martha Argerich and Daniel Rivera. Martha Argerich, considered as the greatest pianist of all times, performes together with her collegue Daviel Rivera. Both were born in Argentina, Rivera meanwhile is Italian citizen. The artistic collaboration of  Rivera and Argerich started in 2009, when Rivera performed a transcription of Straviskij’s “Sacre du printemps” at the “Progetto Martha Argerich” in Lugano. During the concert in Taormina they will perform the Concert n. 1 in E-flat major by Franz Liszt (Martha Argerich) and the Concert op. 16 in A minor by Edvard Grieg (Daniel Rivera).
