SICILY COOKING CLASSES IN TAORMINA
The best way to get to know a culture is through sampling its food, but even better is learning how to cook it.
The Mediterranean diet was declared by UNESCO "Intangible Cultural Heritage" in 2010.
Sicilian food follows the Mediterranean diet, which is characterized by olive oil as the dominant fat source and a high to moderate consumption of fruit and vegetables, grains, legumes and fish in combination with small amounts of meat and, of course, wine with meals. Studies confirm the positive health effects of the Mediterranean diet and let?s not forget that the Mediterranean way of eating is tasty, flavorful and enjoyable!
Our cooking classes in Taormina are carefully planned to give you a hands-on introduction to Sicilian cuisine.
We at the Villa Schuler recommend the popular Sicilian cooking lessons organised by our partner restaurant, the Ristorante "Al Melograno", located 5 walking minutes from our Villa Schuler, right in the medieval center of Taormina and set in a quiet courtyard near the historic arch "Porta Messina", the beginning of the pedestriam Main Street "Corso Umberto".
Cooking classes begin at 9:00 with a small breakfast offered at the "Al Melograno" and end at 12:30, followed by lunch.
They include first a guided tour in english of the town's market (100 mt)where the ingredients for the day will be bought fresh.
Immediately after getting back to the Ristorante Al Melograno, there will be an explanation of the dishes introduced by your Sicilian Chef Massimo.
After this preparation, the group will enter the kitchen and start the cooking of the dishes.
Everything will be explained in English and a professional sommelier will also be on hand to help choose the best wine for each meal.
At 12.30 you will enjoy your Sicilian sit-down lunch, when you eat the dishes you have prepared, accompained by good Sicilian red and white wines in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

- Typical Sicilian Antipasti
- Prepare fresh hand made "maccheroni" pasta
- Prepare "caponata", the famous Sicilian aubergine/eggplant dish consisting of a cooked vegetables made from chopped fried eggplant and celery seasoned with sweetened vinegar and with capers in a sweet and sour sauce.
- Fish or meat as involtini di spatola, calamari ai sapori di Sicilia, braciola di carne, polpette con il sugo)
- Cannoli (sweet ricotta cheese dessert)
- The meal is accompanied with a side dish and Sicilian wines.
Genuine food should be enjoyed seasonally, this menu is therefore subject to seasonal changes.
