EVENTS 2017

We are constantly searching the internet and other sources in order to inform you as soon as possible about the most interesting events for Taormina, its surroundings and Sicily. For the year 2017 until now we found only a few events, which we listed below.

Attending one of the events inside Taormina’s famous Greek Theatre is surely one of the most beautiful experiences during a summertime stay in Taormina. From mid June until beginning of September lots of premium classical or pop concerts, opera and ballet performances use to attrack hundreds of spectators.

Until now we found one series of 3 evenings already fixed, the one with the Italian singers‘ trio „Il Volo“ June 1, 3 and 4 2017 (more details see below)

And of course, one of the most interesing event for Taormina is the historic and glamorous TaorminaFilmFest. Next year’s 63rd edition will take place from June 10 to 17, 2017. (more details see below)

Weekly market big market with a great selection of clothes, shoes and household items. Only few stands with fruits, cheeses and vegetables.

Daily except Sunday (5.00 to 12.00 h)
Fontana dell’Amenano and surrounding area – Catania
Mercato del Pesce Famous fish market with all the plentifulness the mediterranean sea offers, presented by enthusiastic market criers, or better: market singers. There are also stands with fruits, cheeses and vegetables and some good restaurants around.

Convento Agostiniano – Forza d’Agrò
CioccolArtSicily a sweet trip to Sicilian art and history. Sculptures, related to famous Sicilian artworks (such as the „Venus of Morgantina”) made from chocolate.
Opening hours:  until November 2 daily 10 to 14.30 h and 15.30 to 19.30 h – November 3 to March 31, 2017: Saturday and Sunday 10 to 17.00 h.

Palazzo ex Pretura – Corso Umberto, Taormina
Taormina Cinema. Exhibition on the Taormina International Film Fest. Photographies on the protagonists, celebrities, actors and  locations of the famous Film Fest, held since the year of  1955. The exhibition also shows Taormina as a film set, that directors such as Michelangelo Antonioni, Woody Allen, Luc Besson, Francis Ford Coppola and Roberto Benigni chose for some of their movies. Opening hours: daily 10 to 13.00 and 16 to 19.00 h.

Il Futuro Sopravvenuto/The Arrival of the Future – action art, communication and post-humanism in Futurism. 70 works of prominent artists of the Italian Futurist movement, such as Giacomo Balla, Gino Severini, Umberto Boccioni, Luigi Russolo , Romolo Romani, Carlo Erba, Arnaldo Ginna, Carlo Carra, and many others. Most of the works come from the archive Futur-Ism, from the Collection Ventura, from the collection Trust Aletta, some of which were exposed in historical in large international exhibitions of the time, such as the Venice Biennale in 1930, and after the dissolution of the movement in 1944, in some of the most prestigious museums in the world, such as the Centre Pompidou, Musée d’Orsay in Paris and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. The exhibition, curated by Giancarlo Carpi and Joseph Stagnitta in collaboration with Serena Dell’Aira, does not want retrace the entire history of futurism (1909-1944), but to focus on the moment when the futurists became aware of a necessary connection between Art and Life (1915-1944), which also connects the end of futurism with pop art and with informal post-war. The important „colored plastic Complex din + speed” by Giacomo Balla, work reproduced also in the Manifesto „reconstruction of the universe” of 1915 is the main core of the exhibition, furthermore there will be exhibited posters, signed first editions of the Futurist Marinetti’s manifesto, Futurist clothes and a sound installation with the „noise music” of the Futurist composer Luigi Russolo in the crypt of the former church.

Il toro, il dio, l’eroe – Tauromenion e le sue monete. The taurus, the god and the heroe – Tauromenion and its coins.
Opening of the numismatic exhibition, curated by scientists of the Universities of Messina and of Calabria. Most of the coins of this exhibition date from the ancient Greek period of Taormina, during the IV and the III century before Christ. The exhibition points on to the iconographic aspects of the coins. Open until February 24, 2017.

May 10
Giro d’Italia will cross TAORMINA with a magic ride through our main (usually pedestrian) street CORSO UMBERTO. The 2017 Giro d’Italia will run from Friday May 5 to Sunday May 28, 2017. It will travel from Sardinia to Sicily and from the Italian toe to the Alps in the north.

May 26 and 27
G7 SUMMIT in TAORMINA on May 26 & 27, 2017. The GROUP OF SEVEN leading industrialized nations will meet in Taormina, Sicily. Lots of things will happen in Taormina till then and on a seperate event section, named G7 Summit 2017, on this Hotel Villa Schuler website, we will keep you updated with our regular TAORMINA G7 News. 

JUNE 2017

June 1, 3 and 4 (21.30 h)

Il Volo. The three young pop and classic crossover singers presenting their album “Notte magica – a tribute to the Three Tenors” with the extraordinary participation of Plàcido Domingo, who will not only conduct the Orchestra del Teatro Massimo di Palermo alternating with the conductor Marcello Rota, but will also sing with Il Volo in “Non Ti Scordar Di Me”.

Teatro Antico and various locations – Taormina
TaorminaFilmFest 2017 63nd Edition. Even if there are still fights on the question who will manage the 63nd edition of this historical film festival, the dates have been published. TaorminaFilmFest brings some of the biggest stars to Taormina for a spectacular celebration of film, most of the events taking place at Taormina’s unique Greek Theatre. Film premieres and screenings of  films in competition will alternate with workshops, lectures and side events full of elegant attire.

Palazzo Corvaja – Taormina
Van Gogh Multimedia Experience. Notte Stellata. Opening night of this extraordinary exhibition. Installations and projections of photographies and videos showing the famous paintings of Vincent Van Gogh, combined with quotations and excerpts from his letters to his brother Theo and musics by the french impressionist composer Paul Dukas and by Johann Sebastian Bach. The opening night is dedicated to the famous painting The starry night (1889, the original is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York). The actor Sebastiano Lo Monaco will read from van Gogh’s letters, Rosellina Guzzo will play the celtic harp and the sand artist Stefania Bruno will perform to Don McLean’s song „Vincent“, creating a series of sand pictures on the vita of the artist.
The exhibition will last until September 17, 2017, Opening hours: June 1 to July 15, 10.00 to 20.00 h; July 16 to September 1, 10.00 to 14.00 h and 17.00 to 22.00 h, September 2 to 17, 10.00 to 20.00 h

Kasabian the british rock band form Leicester in concert. The band’s music is often described as „indie rock”, but guitarrist and vocalist Sergio Pizzorno has said he „hates indie bands” and does not feel Kasabian fit into that category.
