Centro Culturale Le Ciminiere - Catania
The opening hours of two Museums on the premises of the Centro Culturale Le Ciminiere have been extended during the month of August: the Historic Museum of the 1943 Landings in Sicily (Museo dello sbarco in Sicilia) and the Museum of Cinema (Museo del Cinema). They will be open every day (except Mondays) from 9.00 h to 22.00 h. The Cultural Centre Le Ciminiere is located in the Viale Africa not far from the main train station.

Orto Botanico - Catania
The Alkantara Fest 2010, which will bring a series of concerts of world music to Catania and Milo from July 21 to September 5 (dates see at EVENTS). The location for this festival in Catania is the Botanical Gardens, entrance Via Etnea 397. Siracusa Train Station
Il Treno del Barocco - The Baroque TrainThe Baroque Train restarts its estival railway line Siracusa-Noto-Scicli-Modica-Ragusa and vice versa. It passes by the most beautiful baroque cities of Sicily. The train halts in each town for about one hour and the travellers can join a guided excursion by bus. The places are limited (136 seats), reservations are obligatory and can be made from Monday to Friday (9 to 13.00 h) at the Tourist Board of Modica, Tel 0932 759634. After that the tickets (16 Euro for adults, 9 Euro for children) have to be taken from the office of Dopolavoro Ferroviario at the train station of Siracusa.

Chiese aperte. Open Churches and palazzi. The opportunity to visit churches and their artworks, that usually are closed for the public. The following churches can be visited between 9.00 and 12.00 h: Church of San Nicolò, della Badia, San Cataldo, Santissimo Salvatore, Chiesa della Catena and Church of Santa Maria, also the smal private Church of San Giovanni. Others buildings to be visited are the Palazzo Sgadari, Pinacoteca Gianbecchina and the recently restaured Palazzo Bongiorno. Opening hours: daily 9.00 to 12.00 h

Calatabiano (Catania)
Castello di Calatabiano The Castle of the small town of Calatabiano, near Taormina, has been restored and is open now for the public. The history of the location goes back to the 4th and 3rd century before Christ, the Greeks, the Romans and the Arabs. The name of Calatabiano derives from the arabian Kalaat-al Bian, which meas the rock of Biano. The nucleus of the actual structure is Byzantine.
With the restoring has been built a panaramic elevator which brings the visitors to the top of the rock where the castle is situated and where they find a museum, a book shop and a cafeteria.

Palazzo dei Normanni - Palermo
Notti Palatine. Guided tours to the Palazzo dei Normanni by night-time and his well know highlights such as the Capella Palatina but also to its hidden treasures, such as the chappel of Santa Maria delle Grazie, which is located below the Capella Palatina. The tour ends on the terraces calle terazze della Cavallerizza, accessible to the public for the first time ever. There the visitors will get some fingerfood of gastronimic specialities from Sicily and some local music. The guided tours are held every day from Tuesday to Saturday (not on Sundays and Mondays) begin at 21.00, 21.45, 22.30 and 23.15h. Palio dei Normanni. A great event in Piazza Armerina. Three days of medieval re-enactments, processions and tournaments. The heart of the events is the tournament of the cavaliers of the different quarters of the city. On August 12 the horses and their riders of the four quarters of the city will be blessed in the cathedral. After that the historic procession will be held in the streets of Piazza Armerina. On August 13 will be performed the re-enactment of the handing over of the town's key to count Ruggero and his troops, including the submission of the Arabian dignitaries of the town. An impressing procession from Porta castellina to Piazza Duomo and a re-enactment full of colours, sounds, musics and costumes. August 14 is the day of the tournaments between the teams of the four quarters Monte (coloured yellow), Castellina (coloured blue), Canali (coloured red) Casalotto (coloured green) that take place at the Campo Sant Ippolito, beginning in the early afternoon.

The Illuminated Scala. The famous staircase of Caltagirone offers a unique show on the nights of August 14 and 15, when it is illuminated in celebration of Maria SS. del Ponte. Following a secular tradition that originated in 1600, thousands of cups rigorously prepared and hand colored are arranged throughout the steps to form a wonderful design. The bottom of the cups is filled with sand and an oil lamp. At a certain hour hundreds of people holding little wooden sticks crowd the Scala each lighting one lamp, so that in a matter of a few minutes a blazing light illuminates the cups offeringan exciting show. In the same night skilled workmen reposition the cups to create a new design for the coming evening.

Sherbeth Festival. Ice Cream Festival. The name sherbeth origins from the times, when the arabs governed Sicily and made sherbeth, a sorbet made with fruits and the ice from Mt. Etna. Cefalu was in former times a center of stocking the ice cubes. During the festival visitors can taste a vast variety of differnt flavours presented by more than 30 Sicilian, Italian and international ice cream makers. A fun fair, musics and other entertainments will accompany the festival.

Cous Cous Fest. The 13th edition of this popular culinary feast dedicated to the famous Arabian dish Cous Cous which has its own tradition in the region of Trapani and Palermo. San Vito Lo Capo's Cous Cous Festival's principal event is a cous cous cook-off with the best cous cous Chefs from Israel, Morocco, Egypt, France, Algeria, Tunisia and Italy participating to determine who indeed is the cappo of cous cous (the best chef) in the Mediterranean. The festival also includes four evenings of music, featuring free performances by Sicilian and African World Music artists as Negrita, Tarantolato di Tricarico, Lautari, Giuliano Palma, Bandabardò and Corde Pazze in the Piazza Santuario in the heart of the ancient town.

Palazzo Corvaia - Taormina
Sinopoli Festival. The 5th edition of this festival dedicated to the conductor and composer Giuseppe Sinopoli, who died from a heart attack in the year of 2001 while conducting Giuseppe Verdi's opera Aida at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. The Giuseppe Sinopoli Festival does not only celebrate Sinopoli as a musician and as a conductor but also as a composer, a doctor, an archaeologist and intellectual. There will be a variety of events from music and literature, theatre and art to conferences, exhibitions, publications and, of course, concerts. Every year the Festival welcomes the most important orchestras of the country. On the occasion of the first edition of the Giuseppe Sinopoli Festival the Sinopoli Chamber Orchestra was formed, in collaboration with the Conservatorio "Arcangelo Corelli" of Messina. The Orchestra, young talented musicians, both pupils and teachers of the Conservatorio, mostly performs works by Giuseppe Sinopoli.
