Bordonaro (Messina)
Epiphania. The Epiphany in Bordonaro, as in other Sicilian villages and towns, marks the end of the Christmas festive season. Locals erect a Pagghiaru, a special Epiphany tree covered with fruit and bread and a two-metre-high cross on top. After the evening mass, crowds of young people in the main public square literally assault the tree to get at the delicacies suspended at the top. This is followed by a theatrical performance of "Cavaddazzu e l'omu sabbagghiu", which translates from the Sicilian dialect as "Man and Ferocious Nature".
January 6
Piana degli Albanesi (Palermo)
Epiphania. During Epiphany visitors can witness the ancient and carefully-preserved religious customs of former Albanian immigrants. Piana degli Albanesi is an ethno-anthropological oasis only 15 miles from Palermo. It was founded in 1488, when a group of inhabitants from central Albania settled as refugees, fleeing from Turkish armies. Epiphany is the day on which followers of the Greek-Orthodox Church celebrate Jesus' baptism. A font brimming with water is placed in Piazza della Fontana, the main public square, in which a holy cross is immersed three times. After that a dove receives similar treatment and is then allowed to fly away. The dove represents the holy trinity, and the act of liberation is symbolic of freedom and religious sanctity.

Chiesa di S. Sebastiano - Mistretta (Messina)
Patron's Feast of San Sebastiano - A procession takes place in the streets of Mistretta in January (another one in August) every year, with live music and colourful religious paraphernalia. Big candles and the large urn of the patron are carried by the believers. The former martyr San Sebastiano was a soldier under the Roman emperors Diocleziano and Massimiano. He was a christian, for which he was condemned to death, miraculously surviving an attempted execution by archers. Later on he eventually was caught and drowned, with no miracle saving his life a second time.

The Illuminated Scala. The Scala offers a unique show on the nights of July 24 and 25 and August 14 and 15, when it is illuminated in celebration of Saint James, the town?s Patron Saint. Following a secular tradition that originated in 1600, thousands of cups rigorously prepared and hand colored are arranged throughout the steps to form a wonderful design. The bottom of the cups is filled with sand and an oil lamp. At a certain hour hundreds of people holding little wooden sticks crowd the Scala each lighting one lamp, so that in a matter of a few minutes a blazing light illuminates the cups offeringan exciting show. In the same night between the24th andthe 25th , skilled workmen reposition the cups to create a new design for the coming evening. The Scala will be illuminated again on August 14th and15th for the solemnity of Maria SS. del Ponte.
